Chicago – This past weekend, America’s Best DJ Summer Tour Presented by Pioneer DJ & DJ Times was feeling plenty patriotic, and lucky for us we got to spend the 4th of July and its immediate aftermath in one of America’s greatest cities—Chicago, Ill.
In town for Wavefront Music Festival, which ran July 5-7 at the picturesque Montrose Beach, the tour caught some terrific performances from ABDJ nominees and more. While veteran Brit acts like Fatboy Slim brought the goods to the festival crowd, relative newcomers like Jamie Jones dropped whopping grooves for underground-lovers as well.
A dozen ABDJ noms played Wavefront, including AC Slater (of Trouble & Bass), 3lau, Cedric Gervais, Derrick Carter with Mark Farina, Diplo, Dubfire, Nicolas Jaar, Sharam, and Soul Clap—a great bill, really.
But two performances from ABDJ nominees must be mentioned. In a 90-minute Friday timeslot on The Cube stage, Danny Tenaglia kicked out the jams with a mix of classics (River Ocean’s “Love & Happiness”) and disco gems (Bohannan’s “Let’s Start the Dance”) that had dancers shaking their hips and kicking up plenty of sand. Then on Saturday at the Legends: Chicago Heritage tent, Frankie Knuckles dropped a sweet set of his own classics (“Baby Wants to Ride” with Jamie Principle out front on the mic), new tunes (Director Cut’s “Let’s Stay Home”) and evergreen dancefloor winners (Pete Heller’s “Big Love”). Danny and The Godfather brought this music back to its original essence, and turned us all out.
So, what’s on this weekend? Over at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, N.Y., we’re holding it down at the Camp Bisco festival at this very moment. Before it’s all over on the evening of July 13, we’ll have seen 11 America’s Best DJ nominees rock the upstate camp grounds. They include Alvin Risk, Bassnectar, Baauer, Crizzly, Designer Drugs, Dillon Francis, Flosstradamus, Paper Diamond, RL Grime, Seven Lions and Wolfgang Gartner. Break out those sleeping bags.
Then Saturday night at the legendary First Avenue club in Minneapolis, it’s Bassgasm 9. A nine-hour event put together by Midwestern techno icon Woody McBride, Bassgasm will present over 50 acts on five stages in the venue made famous by Prince’s “Purple Rain.” In addition to headliners Goldie, Beat Pharmacy and Mochipet—plus ABDJ nominee Soviet Panda—Bassgasm will offer a hardcore stage co-presented by Wisconsin’s infamous Drop Bass Network—it’ll include DJ ESP (McBride), Jethro X and Centrific. Let’s go crazy.
